Can you suffer guilt and loneliness without having acted dishonestly or selfishly?

Yes. This was merely one example of how we need to understand the nature of the world in order to be successful in it.

But in a broader sense, any guilt or loneliness does indeed point to some deficiency, at the minimum of the mind, which itself is a shortcoming.

The sensations of guilt and loneliness could arise out of a deficiency in the mind? To pull from an earlier essay: “If the ultimate reality is misunderstood, existence is attributed to that which doesn’t exist, and that is evil: what is not masquerading as what is.“ Might that be related?
