(For the previous installment of "Exodus, Exile and Redemption," click here. For ToC, click here.) In the next chapter, we will analyze the character of the righteous patriarch Yaakov. Others might shy away from scrutinizing the human character traits of such a great tsaddik with the directness that we utilize herein, out of a sense of reverence and respect. I see things differently. In my opinion, that approach, although well-intentioned, ultimately does a disservice to the Torah. In order to fully understand and learn from the stories of the tsaddikim as they are depicted in the Torah, we must follow nothing but the lead of the Torah itself and study all of its narratives with the same intensive discernment, honesty and accuracy.
